VX One Discussions / Re: Portsmouth Yardstick Handicap
February 10, 2019, 12:50:41 PM
More than 5 years ago the class posted this:
The Class Association has worked with US Sailing to get an official "provisional" D-PN assigned to the VX One.  These are provisional pending submission of actual race data that can be figured into the Portsmouth formula, so if you race the VX under Portsmouth, please do everything you can to get the race results submitted to US Sailing.  Contact US Sailing for official copies of these numbers if needed:

VXONE   BN HC
D-PN   0-1      2-3   4       5-9
77.0       78.4     75.9       75.5     75.5

I have raced my VX with the 77 handicap for 5 years and it seems reasonable.

Are you looking for an international rating?

This works.

A former owner kept their VX on a jet ski lift.

After this last post I changed to a deck mounted mainsheet cam cleat.  Surprisingly it is a much better solution. The deck cleat was not a tripping problem.  In light air I hold the line above the cleat.  In heavy air leverage to the deck cleat while hiking was better, also a surprise.  Wish I had made this change sooner.

I had noticed this too.  How many inches should the gnav shoe be able to travel?  Mine looks like it has a 4" range.

Elegant solution. I like the way you solved the ring retention problem.  The block I mentioned above has been working out with the vectran.
I will make a 5mm double braid with dyneema 99 core to compare with the vectran MH.

One of the best reasons to attend the mid-winters or nationals is to ask questions and see different approaches to problems.  Beside picking up tips on sailing faster, I found three gems on hardware. 1) US Cargo sells a small stainless ratchet trailer tie down.  It works so well I bought 2 more for other projects. 2) Lots of discussion about trailer tire wear.  The NAC RC Pro described his frustration with tire wear on a J70 trailer. His final solution - get a new axle.  I checked my torsion axle and found that the tires were toed out 1-1/2".  Apparently too many potholes and/or curb hits. No one online thought it was worth repairing.  I installed a new axel and what a difference. 3) I had a problem with my gnav car slipping off its boom track. I checked out one of the other gadget skipper's setup and noticed that he had replaced the car bungie hold down with non stretch line.  I did the same with spider line and my car slipping problems went away.  Thanks to all people who patiently listened and contributed.

My wife of 58 shows how to drop the kite in 10-15kts.  Last 2 minutes of race is SF Bay running down a pair of J70s. https://www.facebook.com/susan.pike.355/videos/1686704374726212/

Main halyard stretch is annoying. I made a new main halyard where the first 28' is Vectran and the rest is dyneema. The Vectran cinches around the horn. The halyard stretch is much less and I no longer bottom out on the main downhaul. I was also worried about using a shackle with the Vectran and so I replaced the shackle with a small block.
